List do Prezydenta Obamy w związku z wizytą w Chinach
Zachęcamy do wysyłania własnych apeli do Prezydenta USA poprzez stronę internetową: www.whitehouse.gov/CONTACT
Warsaw, November 2, 2009
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing on behalf of the Other Space Foundation from Poland to urge you to make Tibet a substantial part of the agenda during your trip to China in November.
I hope that the results of your visit to China will include concrete progress on critical issues of human rights violation such as the case of Dhondup Wangchen, a Tibetan filmmaker who is being tried in secret for exercising his basic right to freedom of expression by interviewing Tibetans in Tibet. When you meet President Hu Jintao, I strongly urge you to raise the following points:
- the Chinese government shall provide full information pertaining to Dhondup Wangchen's case, including the charges against him and the status of his trial.
- to ensure that Dhondup Wangchen receives a full and open trial and that he is allowed legal counsel of his own choosing, the Chinese authorities grant permission for observers to attend Dhondup Wangchen's trial;
- they immediately release Dhondup Wangchen, as his only "crime" was to peacefully exercise his right to freedom of expression, as guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
You are undoubtedly aware that the absence of a meeting with the Dalai Lama in October was widely seen as a concession to the Chinese government, which has occupied Tibet for over 50 years. It is therefore essential to clarify the stand of the American administration towards Tibet. I strongly hope that during your meetings with the Chinese government you will be able to make real progress towards a fair and lasting resolution for the Tibetan people.
